Dr. Luke Vander Wal
PsyD
I firmly believe that anyone can benefit from therapy. We, as humans, are complicated,
and each of us have our unique identity and history of experiences. A reality we all face,
however, is that life will have disappointments, mistakes, hurts, losses, and challenges.
We need the support of others and opportunities to process our experiences. As a
therapist, I aim to provide a safe, confidential, and comfortable place to discuss life,
both past and present. Together, we work to better understand your experiences, the
challenges you may face, and your hopes for the future.
Therapy can feel a bit unusual or awkward at first, and that is okay! It’s not always safe
or appropriate to meet someone new and discuss details of our life. Therapy provides a
safe and confidential environment, but it may take a couple meetings to feel more
comfortable. Each person and situation is unique, so therapy will look a little different
based on what is comfortable and helpful for you. Sessions may involve conversation
about the past and present, the use of art or activities, or learning helpful resources or
skills. Therapy sessions can feel positive and exciting, but sometimes they are hard
work. Acknowledging and working through uncomfortable or frustrating things can be
part of the process required to make improvements in life.
My therapeutic approach is grounded in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and will
incorporate different approaches (ACT, DBT, EFT, solution-focused…etc.) as is
appropriate and beneficial. CBT fundamentally says that our experiences in life bring up
the core three: emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, which are all connected to each
other. Therapy will work to build the ability to notice these thoughts, emotions, and
actions so that the connections between them can be better understood. The more we
can notice and understand these three, the easier it will be to make positive changes in
life.
I work with kids (8+), adolescents, young adults, couples, and adults of all ages. I
completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology through Calvin University before
attending Wheaton College’s School of Psychology, Counseling, and Family Therapy for
my master’s and doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I have been providing therapy and
assessment services since 2017. Common experiences addressed in therapy include
anxiety, depression, trauma, significant life changes, religious/spiritual struggles,
grief/loss, ADHD, pornography, identity, behavioral concerns, and conflict with family,
friends, or significant others. For couples' therapy, I use the Prepare/Enrich program
resources and am certified to offer the formal assessment if that is desired.
